EMT 254 Special Populations

(Contact Hours: 3.5) Paramedics treat not only a variety of medical and traumatic conditions but must also give consideration to patients with special needs, especially women, children, and the elderly. The course looks at gynecological and obstetrical emergencies including simulation education with both normal and complicated delivery situations including neonatal resuscitation. A significant amount of time will be spent on pediatric emergencies and common childhood illness including how assessment and treatment protocols change in relation to pediatric emergencies. Geriatric emergencies will explore common physiologic changes related to aging, and common disease presentations including end of life issues. PREREQUISITE: Successful completion of EMT 154 and EMT 234 is REQUIRED. Corequisite: EMT 246 and EMT 248.
