(Contact Hours: 6) This course is designed to present the common laboratory methods in instrumental analysis. Topics will include spectroscopy and chromatography. For each topic, the essential chemical theories will be presented, as well as the basics of instrument design, maintenance, and operation. Specific topics may include ultra violet, infra red, and nuclear magnetic and/or mass spectroscopies. Gas and high performance liquid chromatography will also be covered, as well as atomic spectroscopies. Some emphasis will be given to instrument setup, basic maintenance and troubleshooting, as well as sample preparation and analysis of instrument outputs. PREREQUISITE: Successful completion of CHM 130 is REQUIRED. CHM 220 is recommended. Corequisite: CHM 220, if not completed as a prerequisite.
