EMT 244 Trauma Life Support
(Contact Hours: 3.5) The origins of EMS lie in providing care for the victims of traumatic events, especially those involving motor vehicles, and penetrating trauma such as gunshot wounds. This class explores the physiology of life and death, the various etiologies and classifications of shock, the mechanisms that cause life threatening injuries and the lifesaving interventions that can be performed in the field. Scenario based training emphasizes both rapid and focused trauma assessments, invasive treatment interventions (needle and surgical Cricothyrotomy, thoracocentesis, chest tube monitoring, vascular access) for specific life threats, and transport criteria as outlined by the Centers for Disease Control Trauma Triage Criteria. PREREQUISITE: Successful completion of EMT 138, EMT 144, and EMT 154 is REQUIRED.
