EDU 109 Early Literacy
(Contact Hours: 3) This course is a study of the fundamentals of childhood literacy, birth through age 9. Students will learn the importance of language and literacy development for children in the early stages of literacy development, including the importance of play, exposure to a variety of literacies, and engaging in language and text-rich environments. Students will also learn the foundations of literacy education, including how to create early childhood classrooms and learning environments that are culturally responsive and welcoming to a variety of young learners, their families, and their communities. EDU 109 also focuses on the socio-cultural development of childhood literacy, including respect for diversity of the various language and literacies practices of communities and families. Students will consider what motivates babies and toddlers at home and in pre-school and what motivates young children in early education classrooms. Students will analyze the various cultural, socioeconomic, and environmental factors that influence literacy development. Students in this course are exploring the idea of becoming future educations and will be introduced to standards and practices that align with culturally responsive practices and the Michigan Department of Education. PREREQUISITE: Writing and Reading -- minimum benchmarks will be enforced.
