MATH 087 Foundations: Algebra I

(Contact Hours: 4) This corequisite course is designed to be taken in the first half of a semester, directly before taking MATH 088 during the second half of a semester, in a compressed pairing as a part of our Accelerated Matriculation Program (AMP) courses. This course is intended to provide students an opportunity to develop conceptual understanding and procedural fluency. It is the first of a sequence of two courses that is intended to accelerate the time it takes to master the skills necessary to successfully complete College Algebra or Finite Mathematics. Students will strengthen their mathematical literacy by building a foundation of mathematical concepts focusing on numeracy and problem solving. Students will also build confidence in algebraic concepts including evaluating and simplifying arithmetic and algebraic expressions, solving linear equations and inequalities, and solving systems of linear equations. There will also be an introduction to graphing linear equations, identifying x and y-intercepts, and finding and interpreting the slope of a line. PREREQUISITE: Writing and Reading -- minimum benchmarks will be enforced; and Math -- SAT: 19.5, ALEKS: 9, Accuplacer (Arithmetic): 40, NextGen Accuplacer (Arithmetic): 220, ACT: 15, or COMPASS (PreAlgebra): 29 is REQUIRED.
