HORT 212 Greenhouse Systems

(Contact Hours: 5) Students will learn how to manipulate controlled greenhouse environments to grow a variety of ornamental and edible plants; they will experience crop scheduling, planting, harvesting, and marketing greenhouse, aquaponic, and hydroponic crops. Students will explore the financial and environmental aspects of running a greenhouse that successfully produces a variety of greenhouse crops. Students will learn how to select growing media, nutrient additives, light sources, etc. and will gain hands-on experience adjusting inputs to meet the unique needs of plants grown in controlled environments. Students will also learn to troubleshoot greenhouse equipment and determine when it is necessary to request help from other professional tradespeople (e.g., plumber, electrician, etc.). Minimum benchmarks will be enforced.
