HUM 120H Honors: Utopia or Dystopia?

(Contact Hours: 3) Even before Thomas More coined the term "utopia," humans had been striving to perfect society in a quest to make their lives better. Members of society who seek perfection must ask themselves questions about concepts like necessity, luxury, security, liberty, and human nature. They must anticipate problems and create systems that mitigate or eliminate them. This process may be aimed at perfection, but it can go awry, leading to a society that is damaging to its citizens. In this course we will look at works of literature and other sources that address the quest for utopia and how it plays out in real and fictional worlds. This is a KVCC Honors Program course. It provides qualified and highly motivated students with an enriched academic environment through high-impact educational practices and experiential learning in a community of scholarly minded peers. Honors course sections facilitate additional academic challenge and lively interaction with peers and faculty members in small classes. PREREQUISITE: Writing and Reading -- minimum benchmarks will be enforced.
