SOC 261 Cultures of Latin America

(Contact Hours: 3) This course offers an introduction to contemporary life in Latin America from an ethnographic perspective. The course will review the various cultures of Latin America, using a historic, political and economic perspective. The class assignments and lectures will discuss the connections of how globalization, colonialism and nationalism have impacted the lives of diverse people who live in Latin America today. By locating contemporary societies within broader contexts this class aims to replace cultural stereotypes with anthropological analysis. PREREQUISITE: Writing and Reading -- minimum benchmarks will be enforced.
