ECE 140 Math for Young Children

(Contact Hours: 3) This course introduces students to the core principles of early childhood mathematics education for children aged birth to 8 years. Emphasizing playful, hands-on learning and culturally responsive teaching, students will explore how math can be woven into everyday experiences to spark children?s curiosity and build foundational skills. Students will examine key concepts such as number sense, spatial reasoning, measurement, patterns, and data organization, and learn to design lesson plans that promote mathematical thinking through developmentally appropriate activities. The course also highlights how to create rich learning environments that nurture math exploration and how to collaborate with families to connect math learning to children?s home languages, cultures, and daily lives.
